At Georgia Southern, History students dig into archives, work with museums and community partners, explore historic places, and use digital tools to discover and share the past.
You鈥檒l learn how to weigh evidence, ask difficult questions, and explain how and why change happens. Study widely across the History major or focus your interests through emphases in Public History, Military History, or Legal History (Pre-Law). Take a for-credit and career-oriented internship with one of our regional partners.
With programs in Statesboro, Savannah, Swainsboro, and study abroad options, and close faculty mentorship, History at Georgia Southern combines serious historical study with research, internships, community engagement, and opportunities to put history into practice.
Find Your Path Through History
History gives you room to explore. Follow your interests across regions, periods, and themes, or build a more focused path through one of our three undergraduate emphases. Public History connects the classroom with museums, archives, historic sites, and communities. Military History examines war and society across time and prepares students for advanced study and military or public service. Legal History (Pre-Law) develops the historical understanding, research skills, and evidence-based argument essential to the study and practice of law.
Students ready to move further can also enter Georgia Southern鈥檚 accelerated B.A.鈥揗.A. program and begin graduate study while completing the bachelor鈥檚 degree.

Community Engagement
History at Georgia Southern reaches well beyond campus. Students and faculty work with museums, archives, libraries, historic sites, schools, and community organizations across Statesboro, Savannah, coastal Georgia, and beyond. These partnerships turn local collections and community questions into research, exhibits, digital resources, internships, and public programs.
Personalized Mentorship
History students work closely with faculty from their first courses through advanced research. Faculty help students discover new fields, develop independent projects, find internships and archives, present at conferences, study abroad, and prepare for graduate school and professional careers. Small classes and individual research make mentorship part of the degree rather than an added extra.
History in Action
We learn history by doing it. Georgia Southern students work with original documents and artifacts, create exhibitions and digital maps, record podcasts and oral histories, conduct field research, and present their discoveries to public audiences. From Special Collections and the Georgia Southern Museum to international study and community-based projects, students learn how historians turn evidence into knowledge.

History prepares you to work with evidence, understand complex problems in context, communicate clearly, and make persuasive arguments. Georgia Southern History graduates carry those abilities into law, government, military service, education, museums and archives, nonprofit leadership, research, communications, and business.
The career possibilities are broad. According to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, people with a history degree have , matching the median for degree holders across all fields. History is also a strong foundation for graduate and professional study: 50% of people with history degrees hold an advanced degree, compared with 38% across all fields. That can include professional degrees in law or business, as well as graduate study in fields such as Public History.
Just as important, Georgia Southern students begin building professional experience before graduation through internships, research, public projects, study abroad, and leadership opportunities.
